Cristo’s next film will be screened starting this summer. Expect some dark electronica following the story of a young intersex worker who finds himself caught in a dangerous, drug-related ordeal. River Gallo and Dylan O’Brien star in this long awaited thriller. The film is directed by Esteban Arango, with Gallo writing the script and producing. Ahead of the release of Ponyboi in theaters on June 27 via Fox Entertainment’s Tideline banner, the trailer for Ponyboi has been unveiled by Gathr. The preview zeroes in on the thriller, which enjoys 83% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, and on the main duo. Gallo’s character wants to find better circumstances, which is teased in a potential new romance, but O’Brien is leaning into a more antagonistic portrayal as a pimp. After it premiered at Sundance in 2024, the film has already won a NewFest 2024 Grand Jury Award and a Torino Film Festival win for Gallo’s lead performance. O’Brien spoke to ScreenRant earlier this year about Ponyboi finally getting a release date, saying in part that he was taking the experience in. The thriller has also enjoyed overall positive reviews, with praise for Gallo and O’Brien’s portrayals. ScreenRant‘s Graeme Guttmann awarded the film an 8 out of 10 stars, calling it a fresh crime drama with nuanced performances from the cast.Ponyboi is a must for moviegoers curious about seeing O’Brien in a different role. The actor is known for his comedic and sympathetic characters. Whether it’s the loveable best friend Stiles Stilinski on Teen Wolf or playing the hero in Love and Monsters, O’Brien’s movies often include him on the positive side of the ledger. It is first and foremost, however, a classic thriller that benefits from taking its protagonist’s unique experience and leans it for some reliable genre fare. Following its festival debut last year, it’s only a few months until moviegoers get to see the thriller in theaters. Tags: Cristobal Tapia de Veer, Poniboy film
